Moving forward with my new business
Hi Everyone,
I've started making it a practice to take a few months off a year from blogging. I use that time to reflect, slow down, travel, and catch up on any unfinished projects.
2020 has had a mind of its own; so my vacation was not my usual one. I've stayed home while the world is on fire, a virus runs rampant, and racism is as prevalent as ever.
Despite all that, I find myself moving forward in life embodying Nipsey Hussle's sentiments that "The Marathon Continues".
I'm moving forward in facing my fears and learning how to toggle between my thinking talents and shadow attributes as detailed in Collaborative Intelligence.
One of my main thinking talents is collecting (particularly information), which can on the shadow side lead to hoarding (or paralysis). This talent coupled with my desire for order, can mean that I spend extended time in the gathering phase, trying to get all the pieces so I can place them in order. Which as a shadow attribute can lean towards control. I don't find myself wanting to control people, but I want to control my environment. To gather enough, to learn enough, to ensure every thing is in the right place so I can finally move.
But sometimes, while I end up with a beautiful end product, opportunity can pass.
However on the flip side, I truly believe in setting up a strong foundation from which to build upon. I take care to ensure that details are ready so that when I do move, I do so with confidence and courage.
What is courage if you have everything prepared? Isn't it more courageous to take a leap of faith despite risk and fear? Isn't it more courageous to walk into the unknown with the belief that your skills, talents, and support network will be by your side?
In 2014, I had a dream. I woke up and was touched by this vision that I owned a business. A business where I had a building in an emerging neighborhood. I ran my business how I wanted and I didn't have to take on many clients to make revenue. In the dream I was smiling standing in front of a building that had floor to ceiling windows.
In reality, I had tried to run a business and decided to take a pause. After that dream, I was reignited to share my creative expressions.
I started gathering. I gathered a domain. I gathered books and articles. I read and I read. I even studied entrepreneurship in my PhD program. I was commited to learning it all (another thinking talent - love of learning). Somewhere along the line, I was spending so much time gathering that I wasn't even taking a small step towards doing the work.
There was no action.
Lots of talking, lots of revising, lots of brainstorming in my notebooks, and even discussing ideas in this newsletter.
There were some positives to just gathering. All those years I was gathering, all the tools and technology I would need to do things on my own terms were coming into existence.
So I took a big step. I filed a trademark. I filed some copyrights. I actually started building a new website. Then I shared it with a few friends.
I told myself that on October 1st, I was going to share with you what I was working on.
Then on Tuesday, I got scared.
I started thinking I needed more information. I started thinking that I wasn't done.
And it's true. I really am not done. I have more things to do on my list.
So I started to think that I would just push the date back and no one would know that I was still gathering.
Then on Wednesday, I had a day off from work. I sat in silence, listened to affirmations, did yoga, reread my Intellectual Will, and took a nap.
I woke up from my nap with the idea that I was going to share my website. Fears and all.
Whatever.
I was just going to go for it. I realized that this is a process, a marathon, and I need to focus on the journey, not the destination.
I decided I would be transparent with you.
This business has been a work in progress since 2014. Started from my dreams and now I am actualizing it.
